Wolf rattle and Smudging bowl

For an object of personal significance, I choose to recreate my family’s smudging bowl and wolf rattle(ia'tEn). These items are very important to me because they connect me to my culture. The shaker my family got from an artist one of the times we visited Alert bay, where our reservation is located. The character on the rattle is a wolf which represents strong family ties as well as loyalty, good communication, education, understanding, and intelligence. Rattles like this one are used in Kwakwaka'wakw music for ceremonial purposes to establish contact with the supernatural world. The rattle helps to keep the dancer calm and free of spiritual possession. The smudging bowl was not actually made for smudging and was actually a handmade gift from a family friend who is a local yyc artist ( typically we use Abalone Shell) but I really love the shape and design of this bowl and we do use this one as well. Smudging is a spiritual practice we do to cleanse ourselves, it’s also used for medicinal and practical purposes and spiritual ceremonies.

Here’s my reference pictures :-)
